Orientation Module - Slumberland

The Deconstructed Studio

Dwg 1

The Orientation module marked our first step into college. We began by drawing our dreams, each sketch carrying various emotions and experiences.

Using charcoal, a medium new to most of us, we learned different strokes and their effects. Then we were put into groups of people with similar dreams to make a bigger drawing.

For this, we learned to use our full arm instead of just the wrist to create confident, bold strokes.

We worked on large drawings and went through multiple iterations. We separated, reorganized, and combined our papers to form a complete piece that embraced movement, speed, distortion, loneliness, flow, and a sense of drowning. This exercise pushed us to deconstruct our ideas and rebuild them in unexpected ways.

Translating the drawing into an installation, we aimed to create a model that allowed others to experience the emotions we portrayed. Between figuring out what the installation may look like and what material to use, the form of the installation was decided spontaneously just like the unpredictable nature of our drawing. We tried suspending fabric to achieve a flowing form, experimented with netted fabric and PoP(Plaster of Paris), and eventually, we chose corrugated paper for its balance of stiffness and malleability.

Working with corrugated sheets for the first time added another layer of difficulty. We learned to cut, tuck, stitch, and fold the material to create smooth, flowing forms. We took advantage of the sheet’s fluidity to form curves and crevices, transforming a corner of the studio into an immersive space.
